국가유산청 국립문화유산연구원(원장 임종덕)은 8월 13일 오후 1시 라한셀렉트 경주 다이너스티홀(경북 경주시)에서 「경주 황룡사 중금당 복원연구 성과와 과제」를 주제로 학술대회를 개최한다.

「경주 황룡사지」는 신라의 찬란했던 불교문화를 상징하는 유서 깊은 장소이며, 중문과 9층 목탑, 중금당, 강당이 중심축을 따라 순서대로 배치된 신라 최대 규모의 사찰 터이다. 특히 장륙존상을 비롯한 19존상을 봉안하기 위해 584년 건립된 중금당은 신라를 대표하는 불전이었다.

이번 학술대회는 그동안 축적된 경주 황룡사 중금당 고증연구에 관한 성과를 공유하고, 향후 과제 논의를 통해 경주 황룡사 중금당의 체계적인 복원·정비 기반을 마련하는 자리이다.

학술대회는 건축, 불상, 와전(기와와 전돌), 디지털 등 다양한 분야에서 총 5개의 주제발표와 전문가들의 종합토론으로 이루어진다.

주제발표 이후에는 장헌덕 한국전통문화대학교 명예교수를 좌장으로, 백소훈(명지대학교), 조원창((재)국가문화유산연구원), 최선아(명지대학교), 정여선(국립서울문화유산연구소), 이지형(한국전자통신연구원) 등 건축, 불상, 와전, 디지털 관련 전문가들과 발표자들이 모여 다양한 관점에서 논의하는 종합토론이 진행될 예정이다.

이번 학술대회는 당일 현장등록을 통해 누구나 참석할 수 있으며, 국립문화유산연구원 유튜브(www.youtube.com/@nrichstory)를 통해 실시간 중계도 함께 할 예정이다.

국가유산청 국립문화유산연구원은 이번 학술대회를 통해 고대 관련 분야 전문가와의 학술교류를 확대하고, 국민들에게 연구 성과를 공유할 수 있기를 기대하며, 앞으로도 경주 황룡사의 체계적이고 진정성 있는 복원정비를 위해 심도 깊은 조사·연구를 이어갈 계획이다.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH; Director General Lim Jong-Deock), under the Korea Heritage Service, will host an academic conference titled "Research Outcomes and Future Directions for the Restoration of the Junggeumdang Hall (Main Hall) of Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju" at 1 p.m. on August 13, 2025, in the Dynasty Hall of Lahan Select Gyeongju (Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do).

The Hwangnyongsa Temple Site in Gyeongju is a historic site that symbolizes the splendid Buddhist culture of Silla. As the largest temple site from the Silla period, it features a layout in which the central gate, a nine-story wooden pagoda, the Junggeumdang Hall, and the lecture hall are aligned along a central axis. In particular, the Junggeumdang Hall, constructed in 584 to enshrine 19 Buddhist statues including the Jangnyukjonsang (a 16-foot Buddha statue), served as a representative Buddhist hall of Silla.

The upcoming conference will serve as a venue to share accumulated research findings on the Junggeumdang Hall of Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju and to discuss future research directions, with the goal of laying the foundation for the site's systematic restoration and maintenance.

The conference will feature five presentations across a range of fields, including architecture, Buddhist statues, wajeon,* and digital content, followed by a comprehensive panel discussion with experts.
*Wajeon: a term that collectively refers to traditional roof tiles and bricks

Five presentations will be given to share comprehensive research findings and discuss future research directions related to the Junggeumdang Hall of Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju:

A panel discussion will follow the presentations. Chaired by Professor Emeritus Jang Hun Duk (Korea National University of Cultural Heritage), the session will bring together the presenters and experts in architecture, Buddhist statues, wajeon, and digital content, including Baik So-Hun (Myongji University), Cho Weon Chang (National Cultural Heritage Research Foundation), Choi Sun-Ah (Myongji University), Jeong Yeo-Seon (Seoul National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage), and Lee Ji-Hyung (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), for an in-depth discussion from multiple perspectives.

The conference is open to the public with on-site registration available on the day of the event. It will also be livestreamed on the NRICH YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@nrichstory).

Through this conference, the NRICH, under the Korea Heritage Service, hopes to expand academic exchange with experts in the field of ancient heritage and to share research outcomes with the public. The institute also plans to continue in-depth investigations and research to ensure the systematic and authentic restoration of Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju.
